CAHIR - Situated on the intersection of the Cork/Dublin and Waterford/Cork national primary routes, CAHIR is an important shopping and market centre catering for its own population and a developing district. The town has strong historic links dating back to Norman times. Its predominant feature is the renovated 15th century Butler Castle on the River Suir. The town has developed as an important tourist centre in recent years due in particular to the interesting and attractive features of the Castle and the town and the scenic hinterland. It has also developed a strong industrial base particularly for the meat and engineering industries. The town achieved one of the highest percentage population increases in the period 1971 to 1981 in the South-East Region.
